Sierra Nevada
We showed a new generation of beer drinkers why Sierra Nevada matters.
Sierra Nevada had earned the respect of American craft beer drinkers, but changing tastes had made broad appeal a liability. The brand needed to sharpen its focus around the consumers who would define its future. Through research and positioning, we helped Sierra Nevada identify the mindset of their highest-value drinker and built a strategy around their motivations, giving the brewery a clearer role in the category and a pathway to sustained growth.

Opportunity
Sierra Nevada was an icon of craft beer. But being admired wasn’t enough to be chosen.
As craft beer matured and fragmented, even category leaders needed to fight harder for preference. Sierra Nevada needed to look beyond its pioneering legacy, identify the drinkers most important to its future, and give them a compelling reason to choose the brand.
“I remember my first day trying to sell beer in Chico probably 90% of them hated it… but the 10% who loved it, loved it.”
Ken Grossman, Founder, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
Solution
We defined who Sierra Nevada needed to win with, and what would make them choose it.
We uncovered an audience that wasn’t chasing trends, but chose quality as a reflection of their own standards. That reframed Sierra Nevada from simply a craft beer pioneer into a brand for people who believe great beer deserves intention: when beer matters, it matters which beer you choose.
Impact
A brand positioning became a lens for the entire business.
The strategy aligned Sierra Nevada around a clear audience and enduring belief, giving teams a shared framework for decisions well beyond communications. It informed innovation, portfolio strategy and brand development, helping turn decades of equity into a platform for the brewery’s next chapter of growth.
